Paul J. Botelho, M.D. specializes in Laser Vision Correction, Cataract Surgery and Corneal Transplantation at Center For Sight.
A native of Massachusetts, Dr. Botelho attended The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. As a Chemistry Major at Holy Cross he participated in The College Honors Research Program. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from The College of the Holy Cross in 1988. Dr. Botelho received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1992. He was awarded a four year U.S.A.F. Health Professions Scholarship as a medical student at Boston University. He completed a transitional internship at The Newton-Wellesley Hospital and a residency in ophthalmology at The University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. Botelho completed a Fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. As a cornea fellow at The Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Dr Botelho participated in Corneal and Lasik patient care and clinical research. He received the prestigious Terrence P. O’Brien Research Award for his research in the Management of Infectious Keratitis. Dr. Botelho has authored numerous peer reviewed publications. He has also participated in several national presentations including The 2004 Corneal Society Meeting in New Orleans, LA and The 2005 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Society annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
Dedicated to ophthalmology resident education, Dr. Botelho supervised resident cataract and corneal procedures at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Dr. Botelho continued his pursuit of promoting excellence in cataract, corneal and refractive surgery by joining the Cornea Faculty at Brown Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island. As Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, he received The H. Frederick Stephens, MD Resident Teaching Award for the Department of Ophthalmology at Brown Medical School in 2007.
Board Certified in Ophthalmology since 1998, Dr. Botelho has performed thousands of microsurgical procedures. He performs no-shot, no-stitch cataract surgery and offers Premium Implants including the Crystalens, Restor and Rezoom intraocular lenses to reduce dependence on glasses for reading and driving following cataract surgery. He also uses the new Toric Implants to correct Astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery.
As a specialist in Cornea and External diseases, Dr. Botelho performs current techniques in Corneal Transplant surgery including Deep Lamellar Endothelial Keratoplasty (DLEK, DSAEK). He offers PhotoTherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) for the management of recurrent corneal erosions and corneal scars and pterigium removal with ocular surface reconstruction using Amniotic Membrane Grafts. Dr. Botelho also specializes in all forms of Laser Vision Correction including LASIK, LASEK, PRK, Refractive Lens Exchange, and Custom Laser Vision Correction for the correction of Myopia (Near-sighted), Hyperopia (Far-sighted), and Astigmatism.
Dr. Botelho has cared for patients in southeastern New England since 2000. He is currently on staff of numerous regional hospitals including Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Charlton Memorial Hospital and St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. Dr. Botelho strives to provide unsurpassed eye care through the use of advanced diagnostic testing and surgical techniques.
Dr. Botelho enjoys golfing, sailing and skiing with his children, Paul Jay and Kathryn Marie.
